Event History
Run the Tan, was officially established in 2019, and celebrates the iconic 3.8-kilometer Tan Track at Melbourne’s Royal Botanic Gardens. Known for its scenic loop with sweeping city and garden views, the track has long been a training ground for athletes and a beloved spot for fitness enthusiasts. The inaugural Run the Tan showcase event held in 2021 brought new excitement with the promotion of the digital timing clocks and the creation of the Tan Track Hall of Fame, recognising record-breaking achievements and inspiring runners of all levels. Officiated timing has added a competitive edge, encouraging participants to push their limits and cementing the Tan Track as a venue for athletic excellence. The event also raises funds for local mental health charities, fostering a strong community spirit. Run the Tan has quickly become a celebrated annual tradition, blending competition, health, and philanthropy in a uniquely Melbourne experience.
Course Description
The Tan Track is located around the perimeter of the beautiful Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne, Australia. One Official Lap of the iconic Tan Track is 3.827km and it has with distance markers every 250m. It is suitable for runners of all abilities and comprises of a gravel track except for a bitumen footpath along Anderson Street. The Start and Finish is at the Pillars of Wisdom on Alexandra Avenue. The run direction is clockwise from the Pillars of Wisdom along the Tan Track heading east along Alexandra with the Botanic Gardens on your right and the Yarra River on your left. Make a 90 degree turn up Anderson St, bringing you just short of Domain Rd. From here take another right turn veering back onto the gravel Tan Track alongside Birdswood Ave. You then pass the main entrance to the Gardens heading towards Linlithgow Ave taking in the Shrine of Remembrance on the left along the way and eventually back to Alexandra Avenue to complete a full lap. Keep the gardens on your right-hand side all the way and you can’t get lost!
