Profile
The Gold Coast Marathon is a two-day running festival held on Queensland’s Gold Coast each July.
The event features events from 2km (for children) through to the marathon and beyond, with a 63.3km ultramarathon option.
The event is a World Athletics Gold Label Road Race known for its flat, fast and scenic course and mild, low-humidity climate.
The Half Marathon and junior 2km and 4km races are held on the Saturday of the event, while the 10km and Marathon are held on Sunday. Runners also have the option to compete over 63.3km over the two days, with times from the Half Marathon and Marathon added together for the finishing result.
Event History
The Gold Coast Marathon was first held in 1979 by the Surfer’s Paradise Rotary Club, with the original course commencing in Evandale.
The course start changed to Surfer’s Paradise Surf Club in 1981 and then Broadbeach in 1984. By 1996 over 10,000 participants were taking part in the event annually.
In 2014 the event was awarded IAAF (now World Athletics) Gold Label status.
Course Description
The courses for all events are flat and fast along the Gold Coast Highway. The marathon features out-and-back segments in each direction from the start/finish area, while the half marathon and 10km are just out-and-back.

Participant Profile
Over 15,000 runners participate across the events on offer, with over 4,000 in the marathon, over 8,000 in the half marathon and over 3,000 in the 10km.

What a great place to run my first marathon. Great support along the course and plenty of other runners around me to keep me going. Can’t wait to come back next year!
Always enjoy escaping the Victorian winter for the Gold Coast sunshine. Pancake flat course. I can’t wait!
